Clayroom is partnering with the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank to create - and then sell - over 300 handcrafted bowls to raise funds for the Food Bank!
The Food Bank now serves 55,000 households. This is nearly twice as many as pre-pandemic due to the dramatic increase in food insecurity. Learn more at sfmfoodbank.org.
Empty Bowls is an initiative for ceramic artists to benefit food-related charities. With the objective to "Think Globally, Act Locally," Empty Bowls has helped raise funds for local hunger relief programs since 1990. Learn more at emptybowls.com.
To Buy a Bowl
All bowls will be available to view online beginning March 17th. The bowls will be available to purchase and bid on beginning on March 19th. The auction will culminate with a live portion of the silent auction over Zoom from 6:30-7:30pm on March 26th. Bowls can be picked up at Clayroom Potrero (1431 17th Street) as soon as they are purchased. We unfortunately don't offer shipping, except for bowls won in the auction.
To Help Make Bowls
Thank you for offering your time and art to support a good cause! Clayroom offers free high quality reclaimed clay and discounted wood for you to make bowls. You can begin making bowls today, and the bisque and glaze deadlines are March 3rd and 9th respectively. When you finish your bowls, be sure to sign your name and use the Empty Bowls stamp or write Empty Bowls on the bottom of your piece. To sign up, visit our Bowl Tracker sheet and write in your name!
Zoom Event Details
The March 26th Zoom event will begin at 6:30pm, and we encourage you to fill your bowl with a homemade meal, sit back and hear from some of our artists, as well as a member of the SF-Marin Food Bank! The silent auction will finish at 7:30pm sharp, with the end of the Zoom event. All proceeds from selling the bowls and from the auction will be donated to the Food Bank.

Q: Can I participate in this event?
A: Yes, absolutely! If you are someone who knows how to make a bowl, please sign up on our Bowl Tracker Sheet and start making some bowls! If you won’t be making bowls, you can still absolutely participate by purchasing or bidding on one of the bowls starting on March 19th.
Q: Can I tell my friends and family about this event?
A: Please do! The more recognition and visibility this event gets, the more of an impact we'll be able to make by raising funds for the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank.
Q: What size should the bowls be? Do I have to decorate them in a certain way?
A: As an artist, you have full control over what you want your bowl to look like, just make sure it's food safe! Please sign your bowl with one of our Empty Bowls stamps (now available at both studios) and your own signature.
Q: How do I receive my free party mix clay or discounted wood?
A: Let a Clayroom team member know that you’re making a bowl for the Empty Bowls event, and we’ll be sure to help you get what you need.
Q: When are the bisque and glaze deadlines?
A: The deadline for bisque firing is March 3rd, and the deadline for glaze firing is March 9th. Don’t forget that February is a short month!
Q: When will bowls be available for purchase?
A: Bowls will be available for purchase starting on March 19th. The Zoom event will happen on March 26th, and will include a silent auction for selected pieces.
Q: What is the format of the Zoom event on March 26th?
A: We’ll have time for people to show off the bowls they purchased in the prior week, and share a meal together. We’ll then have speakers from the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank, and artists while our silent auction is conducted from 6:30-7:30pm.
Q: How much will the bowls cost?
A: The bowls will be available online with a suggested contribution of $25 to $250. Pieces will be auctioned off starting at $50.
Q: How do I get my work into the silent auction?
A: If you’re interested in having your work in the silent auction, just let us know that you’re interested and show us your finished piece!
