Service Description

This class is held at our Potrero Hill Studio. Intro to Clay Mondays @6pm, November 17th-January 5th Intro to Clay Thursdays @6pm November 20th-January 8th Intro to Clay Saturdays @11am, November 22nd-January 10th Class Description: This intensive six week course is an excellent introduction to ceramics for students who are interested in throwing on the wheel, trimming work, surface design techniques, glazing, and hand-building which can be incorporated into wheel-work or explored independently. This class is designed for beginners with little to no ceramics experience who are looking to gain an overview of the art form. IMPORTANT NOTES: Break Week (Thanksgiving): There will be a break between Week 1 and Week 2 for the Thanksgiving holiday. The studio will be open for Open Studio Monday–Wednesday, but closed Thursday and Friday for the holiday. Holiday Break (Christmas & New Year): There will be a break between Weeks 4 and 5 for the Christmas and New Year holidays. All inclusive including: - 25 pounds of clay (Intro to Clay students start the session with a half bag of clay. If they use it all, they get another half bag free.)- -6-weeks of 2.5 hours of instruction - Unlimited use of studio during open studio hours - Firing fees - Glazes Intro to Clay is a six week course designed for those with little to no experience, but is open to all levels. Learn and try a variety of clay techniques, including the basics of hand-building and throwing. Syllabus: Week 1: Studio Etiquette & Throwing Basics Intro to studio policies, tour, and clay distribution (½-bag policy). Demo attaching clay, centering, pulling walls, and removing from wheel. Show labeling and drying on hardy board. End with cleaning demo and studio etiquette. Week 2: Trimming & Shaping Explain clay stages and demonstrate trimming, labeling, and bisque prep. Review throwing techniques (bellying base, flaring rim) and wedging. Week 3: Handles & Surface Design Midpoint check-in; begin finishing and labeling. Demo collaring for necks, coil/slab handles, scoring, and slipping. Introduce underglaze painting, carving, and color layering. Week 4: Final Wet Work Last class for wet work. Finish trimming and shaping; all pieces on greenware rack by end of class. Begin glazing a piece or two and clean shelves. Week 5: Glazing Review glaze safety and techniques—dipping, pouring, brushing, wax resist. Maintain clean bases, even coverage. All clay must be taken home or donated.

Cancellation Policy

Fees & class schedule: Class fees cover instructed class time (as listed in specific class schedule), use of tools and equipment, open studio hours, studio glazes and firing up to 25 lbs of clay. Additional work may be fired for a fee. Pottery class fees include 25 lbs of clay + wood classes include all lumber Classes are subject to change if minimum student quota isn't met (7 students). Class switches will only be available 1 week prior to the commencement of classes and based on the capacity of classes at time of request.​ Attendance: It is mandatory for all students who are new to the studio attend the first week of classes. No “make-up” classes are given but you're more than welcome to drop-in on another session if there is an opening or absence. For Adult classes, Kids must be 14-years old or older Personal belongings: Any items left behind 30-days after last class may be discarded without notice. Refund policy: Class fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. Refund or Credit (minus $20 processing fee) if a request for refund is received TWO WEEKS and only two weeks before the start of a class. Credit (no refund) with less the 48 hour notice ONLY if your spot can be filled. No refunds or credits after attending 1st class. Classes missed due to failure to attend, planned absences, minor illnesses or vacations will not be credited for future classes. One-Time class registrations such as Drop-In Clay or Friday Night Clay are considered final ONE WEEK before start of class. Open studio hours for students: Monday- Thursday: 10AM-6PM Friday & Saturday: 10AM-9PM Sunday 10AM-7:30PM (Hours subjected to change upon five days' notice)
