Service Description

This class is held at our Potrero Hill Studio Mondays @ 6pm April 15th - May 20th In this class you will learn how to conceptualize and plan out a sculpture with multiple parts, you will learn advanced hand-building techniques, refinement and the sculpting process! All inclusive including: - 25lbs of clay - 6-weeks of 2.5 hours of instruction - Unlimited use of studio during open studio hours - Firing fees - Glazes Week 1: Introductions & Mock Ups Overview: Students will be sculpting a small mock-up sculpture out of a single hunk of clay. Demoing a simple little person or a dog will teach students how to emphasize limbs and body parts. Using this framework, students can begin to think about what sort of creature (or otherwise) they'd like to create for their first project. Does it have definable legs and arms? Does it stand upright or is it assuming a certain position? Is there implied movement? Week 2: Building Onwards & Upwards Overview: Students will be attaching two or more sizeable pinch pots to create a large, hollow vessel. Creating limbs (if applicable) and allowing them substantial drying time before attaching to the body. Week 3: Attachment & Joint Care Overview: Students will be attaching limbs onto a body: scoring thoroughly and using a rubber rib to erase the seam where the pieces connect. Week 4: Embellishing & Surface Decoration on Greenware Overview: Introducing texture to a sculpture with the use of slips and carving tools. Week 5: Fine Details Overview: Adding fine details to sculptures such as facial features, clothing, and small decorations. This introduces students to working on a smaller scale after spending prior classes focusing on the sculpture as a whole. Week 6: Glazing Overview: All work must be glazed for final firing by the end of class*. DOUBLE CHECK all work to make sure there is NO GLAZE on the bottoms.
