SIGN UPS OPEN 2/27 @ 11am! Join us for a 2-day workshop! Friday April 24th - 10am - 5pm Saturday April 25th - 10am - 5pm Clayroom Potrero: 1431 17th St, San Francisco, CA Learn the art of colored porcelain throwing and assembly with Chris Alveshere. In this exciting hands-on workshop you'll learn the techniques to build these whimsical, functional art pieces! We will cover the steps to color your own clay, along with throwing and handbuilding techniques including swelled forms, clay inlay, and throwing in sections, as well as working with firm slabs to create clean color separations and seams. We will discuss color as content, and methods to create forms in a "utilitarian sculpture" vocabulary. Bring your wacky and wild form ideas and we will have a blast! Day 1: Intros. Discussion of participants' ideas and histories with clay. Color multiple balls of clay to work with. Wheel demos . Make parts on the wheel to start drying. Make small parts and details for forms. Ideally demo forms can be force dried to finish with some trimming and throwing in parts. Day 2: Trimming and assembly. Throwing in parts (feet, knobs, etc.) Attachments demo, and assembling parts with clean seams. Smoothing forms and finish details. Cancellation Policy
Workshop Firing Policy (Applies only to non-members) Each participant must complete their greenware piece(s) within the allotted time of the workshop. Workshop participants may opt to have their piece(s) fired at Clay Room if they do not have access to a kiln. Once the work has been bisque fired, participants may return to Clay Room to glaze their piece(s). Participants will have 10 days from the time their bisque piece(s) come out of the kiln to glaze their work. All bisqueware can be found on the Member Bisque Pick-Up Rack. Glazing privileges will be granted only to participants with prior glazing experience. If participant does not have prior glazing experience please reach out to the Head of Studio to develop a plan to complete your work(s). Workshop participants must use glazes stocked by Clay Room. Absolutely no outside glazes are permitted. If a participant chooses not to glaze their work at Clay Room, the bisque-fired piece(s) will be held for one month after removal from the bisque kiln. All glazed and finished work can be found on the Member Glaze Pick-Up Shelf and will be held for one month after exiting the glaze kiln. Clay Room is responsible for timely communication with workshop participants regarding when their pieces exit the kiln.
