Ceramic surface design can be similar to that of a canvas telling a story. We will explore effective ways to compose imagery on slabs and then onto vertical forms. With a brief look at classic ceramic design, we will then discuss line, texture, slips, underglaze, and oxides. Techniques like sgraffito, Mishima, paper and tape masking, and wax resist will also be introduced. In the process of creating new surfaces for his work, Chris will inspire you to think about surfaces in new ways.

Chris' training includes a degree in Mechanical Engineering, studies at Kansas City Art Institute and Penland School of Craft. Apprenticeships and employment include Dimitri Hadzi, Castle Hill Center for the Arts, Sarah Kersten Studio, and Parris Works Pottery.
