Service Description

This class is held at our Potrero Hill Studio Tuesday @ 6pm-8:30PM August 26th-September 30th Bring your favorite furry, scaly, or feathered creature to life in clay! In this six-week handbuilding class, you’ll sculpt an expressive animal figure from the ground up—starting with paws and claws, building torsos and limbs, and finishing with detailed faces full of personality. Along the way, we’ll explore texture, posture, and surface treatments using mason stains and glazes to highlight every whisker, wrinkle, or wing. Whether inspired by a beloved pet or a wild imagination, your creature is sure to tell a story. All inclusive including: - 25lbs of clay - 6 weeks of 2.5 hours of instruction - Unlimited use of studio during open studio hours - Firing fees - Glazes FIGURATIVE SCULPTURE: ANIMALS WEEK ONE: Project planning and texture exploration -Everyone will be using Bmix with the anticipation of applying mason stains during the glazing process. -Are you drawing inspiration from a pet or a creature you’ve encountered? WEEK TWO: Paws and claws -We’ll begin our sculptures by building from the ground up–is your critter mounted on a base or does it stand alone? Does it rest on two feet or four? -We’ll learn how to use pinch pots and coils to create feet. Using slabs, we’ll begin to form legs and allow them to dry slightly before placing weight on them. -Details can be solidified during week four, but we’ll consider how we might carve and adorn the feet of our sculptures. WEEK THREE: Torsos, posture, and position -We’ll roll out slabs for the torsos of our animals and use wooden paddles to shape them. Is your animal slender or rotund? Does it have long hair or scaly skin? -Applying texture and using carving tools will set the stage for our mason stain usage later in the class; mason stains work best on textured surfaces. -Posture ideas: crouching, curled up, lounging, playing with a toy. -Think about weight balance–what are the heaviest parts of your sculpture? WEEK FOUR: Facial expressions and details -What is your animal feeling? Is it basking in bliss or feeling pensive? Is it scheming or giddy? -Using tiny coils and balls of clay, we’ll create facial structures and expressions. WEEK FIVE: Mason stain application -We’ll learn how to apply mason stain washes to our pieces, as well as how to use brush-on glazes to emphasize details. WEEK SIX: Final glazing day!
