Figure Sculpting (Session 7.5)

Service Description

This class is held at our Potrero Hill Studio. Tuesdays @6-8:30PM beginning October 7th- November 11th Class Description: In this intermediate sculpture class, students will learn how to sculpt the human figure realistically. Using traditional sculpting techniques such as coiling and slab-building, we will make faces, bodies, arms and hands to create a large-scale figure. All inclusive including: - 25 lbs of clay - 5 weeks of 2.5 hours of instruction - Unlimited use of studio during open studio hours - Firing fees - Glazes Week 1: Class Overview, Coiled Face Cups Class and studio overview, introductions, studio tour, get clay. Reference photos! Create coiled cups to get used to new clay body, refresher on coiling (this will be helpful since we will using coiling for the heads of our figures) Use cups as a demo/test piece for how to create realistic faces. Students will learn how to create bone structure, eyes, nose, ears, and mouth. Week 2: Bodices, Neck, and Arms Roll out slabs, let dry while doing demo Show how to create a bodice from slab using cutting/altering Show how to create and attach and arms and neck, discuss bone structure (top part of arms and neck are thinnest) Week 3: Hands and Assembly Cover how to create hands and add them to arms Students will begin to assemble their figures by attaching arms, legs (if applicable), hands and feet Week 4: Face Refresher, Hair Students will create the face and head of their figure last from a slab Roll out slabs and let dry while demo-ing Create facial features with examples of different expressions, show how to create the top of the skull with coils. Cut out head to add hair Week 5: Finalizing Sculptures, Surface Design Final work day - students will finish sculptures and add them to the kiln room for firing to ensure they are ready for glazing next week Go over glazing and underglazing Demonstration of how to mix underglazes and create skin tones/realistic shading. Use face cups from week 1 as practice pieces. Week 6: Glaze Day and Potluck Glaze bisqued sculptures

Cancellation Policy

Fees & class schedule: Class fees cover instructed class time (as listed in specific class schedule), use of tools and equipment, open studio hours, studio glazes and firing up to 25 lbs of clay. Additional work may be fired for a fee. Pottery class fees include 25 lbs of clay + wood classes include all lumber Classes are subject to change if minimum student quota isn't met (7 students). Class switches will only be available 1 week prior to the commencement of classes and based on the capacity of classes at time of request.​ Attendance: It is mandatory for all students who are new to the studio attend the first week of classes. No “make-up” classes are given but you're more than welcome to drop-in on another session if there is an opening or absence. For Adult classes, Kids must be 14-years old or older Personal belongings: Any items left behind 30-days after last class may be discarded without notice. Refund policy: Class fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. Refund or Credit (minus $20 processing fee) if a request for refund is received TWO WEEKS and only two weeks before the start of a class. Credit (no refund) with less the 48 hour notice ONLY if your spot can be filled. No refunds or credits after attending 1st class. Classes missed due to failure to attend, planned absences, minor illnesses or vacations will not be credited for future classes. One-Time class registrations such as Drop-In Clay or Friday Night Clay are considered final ONE WEEK before start of class. Open studio hours for students: Monday- Thursday: 10AM-6PM Friday & Saturday: 10AM-9PM Sunday 10AM-7:30PM (Hours subjected to change upon five days' notice)
