This class is held at our Potrero Hill Studio and is a 3 week class in session 5 Jars and Lidded Forms, Wednesday's @ 5:45-8:15 beginning June 25th-July 16th **There will be no classes from June 30 to July 6 in observance of the July 4th holiday. The studio will be closed on July 4, but open studio access will be available to students from June 30 to July 3 and on July 5 and 6. Regular classes resume with Week 2 starting July 7 In this three-week class, students will explore the art of making functional and creative lidded forms. We’ll cover how to throw and trim multiple lid styles—including classic lids, enclosed form jars, and non-ceramic-compatible bases—while learning precise measuring techniques using calipers and shrink rulers. Students will gain confidence throwing off the hump, creating galleries, and safely glazing to prevent lid sticking. Perfect for those looking to expand their technical skills and experiment with unique jar designs. Week 1: Cover creating a gallery on the body of a jar and how to throw three different lid styles off the hump. The first class will go over classic jar and lid shapes, different ways to make a gallery, lid styles for different functions, and how to measure using calipers. Week 2: How to trim lids by attaching them to the wheel with water, throwing knobs versus trimming them, finishing jars from last week for firing. We will also go over how to create an enclosed form jar and two different ways of separating the body from the lid. Finally, we will take a short trip into the glaze room to go over how to safely glaze jars so the lid doesn’t stick. Week 3: How to separate body and lid of enclosed form jar, finishing the piece for firing. For the third and final class, we will cover how to measure and throw the base of a jar for a lid that isn’t made of ceramic (this could be for tupperware or any other purpose, lids could be wooden, plastic, rubber, etc.). Pieces will not have a gallery and we will go over measuring using shrink rulers.
