Service Description

This class is held at our Potrero Hill Studio Saturday @ 11AM-1:30PM January 10th-February 14th Course Description: This immersive 6-week course is designed for intermediate potters seeking to strengthen their throwing skills and explore the rich tradition of Korean ceramics. Through focused instruction, students will improve their general throwing techniques while learning to create iconic Korean forms such as moon jars and maebyeong vases. Some of the main techniques that we will focus on are scaling up and refining our shapes. These forms are an excellent practice to improve general throwing abilities. In addition to hands-on practice the course integrates foundational education on Korean ceramic history and aesthetics. By the end of the course, participants will not only have improved their technical abilities but also developed a more informed and intentional approach to the work. This course is ideal for potters looking to challenge themselves and elevate their craftsmanship. To qualify for this course students must be able to comfortably throw 3-5lb of clay (or more.) There is room in the course for a variety of experience levels as more advanced students have options to scale up and/or work in porcelain. Some techniques that will be covered are Bmix and porcelain preparation including spiral wedging, throwing tall narrow cylinders, methods for creating the maebyeong and moon jar forms, trimming techniques, and glazing techniques including the spray booth. Individualized one-on-one instruction will be provided to all students throughout the course as well. Syllabus: (Week 1) - Overview of ceramic history of Goryeo Dynasty, tall cylinder techniques and practice (Week 2) - Cylinder pratice and maebyeong demo (Week 3) - Continued maebyeong throwing with jars cut in half (Week 4) - Overview of Joseon Dynasty, moon jar demo, trimming demo (Week 5) - Form group critique, trimming (Week 6) - Glazing
