Service Description

This class is held at our Potrero Hill Studio Wednesday January 28th-March 4th 6-8:30PM Class Description: In this six-week course, students will explore the design and construction of functional pouring forms—from classic pitchers to ewers, decanters, and sake sets. We’ll focus on the anatomy of successful pouring vessels: balanced bodies, clean spouts, well-fitted lids, and comfortable handles. Students will strengthen their throwing precision, learn to throw for accurate shrinkage, and practice assembling multi-part forms with intention. By the end of the course, each student will have a small collection of refined pouring pieces and a stronger understanding of fluid dynamics, balance, and craftsmanship. This class is ideal for intermediate students looking to advance their technical skills and explore form, function, and thoughtful design. - 25 lbs of clay - 6-weeks of 2.5 hours of instruction - Unlimited use of the studio during open studio hours - Firing fees - Glazes Week 1 — Pitchers & Pulled Spouts Throwing classic pitcher forms Understanding proportion, balance, and volume Techniques for pulling and shaping clean, functional spouts Week 2 — Trimming, Handles & Intro to Complex Forms Trimming pitcher bodies for optimal weight and pour Pulling and attaching handles Throwing an ewer or olive-oil dispenser How to throw for accurate shrinkage and tight-fitting parts Week 3 — Attaching Spouts & Sake Sets Cutting, refining, and attaching spouts for controlled flow Throwing sake bottles and cups Throwing off the hump to create multiples and matching sets Week 4 — Decanters & Multi-Part Assemblies Throwing decanter bodies and necks Strategies for lids, stoppers, and creating fluid silhouettes Refining proportions across multi-part forms Week 5 — Trim-A-Thon, Surface Design & Glaze Planning Dedicated trimming session for all in-progress work Surface design approaches for pouring vessels Planning glaze combinations for multi-part forms Tips for testing glazes on spouts, lips, and high-contact areas Week 6 — Glazing & Finishing Techniques Glazing all completed pieces Best practices to avoid drips on spouts and rims Potluck! Note: All students are required to clean all work areas used 15 minutes before the class ends.

Cancellation Policy

Fees & class schedule: Class fees cover instructed class time (as listed in specific class schedule), use of tools and equipment, open studio hours, studio glazes and firing up to 25 lbs of clay. Additional work may be fired for a fee. Pottery class fees include 25 lbs of clay + wood classes include all lumber Classes are subject to change if minimum student quota isn't met (7 students). Class switches will only be available 1 week prior to the commencement of classes and based on the capacity of classes at time of request.​ Attendance: It is mandatory for all students who are new to the studio attend the first week of classes. No “make-up” classes are given but you're more than welcome to drop-in on another session if there is an opening or absence. For Adult classes, Kids must be 14-years old or older Personal belongings: Any items left behind 30-days after last class may be discarded without notice. Refund policy: Class fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. Refund or Credit (minus $20 processing fee) if a request for refund is received TWO WEEKS and only two weeks before the start of a class. Credit (no refund) with less the 48 hour notice ONLY if your spot can be filled. No refunds or credits after attending 1st class. Classes missed due to failure to attend, planned absences, minor illnesses or vacations will not be credited for future classes. One-Time class registrations such as Drop-In Clay or Friday Night Clay are considered final ONE WEEK before start of class. Open studio hours for students: Monday- Thursday: 10AM-6PM Friday & Saturday: 10AM-9PM Sunday 10AM-7:30PM (Hours subjected to change upon five days' notice)
