Service Description

This class is held at our Potrero Hill Studio Tuesday @ 6pm-8:30PM January 27th-March 3rd Class Description: In this class, students will create their own molds, stamps, and templates to produce multiples of the same object. An alternative to slipcasting or throwing, handbuilding with slabs allows students to simplify repeatable forms while still making them customizable and unique. This is an intermediate level class and previous handbuilding experience is strongly recommended. Students will be asked to bring in different materials from home. Syllabus: Week 1: Sprigs, Stamps, and Small Repeatables Studio and class overview, studio tour, get clay Go over different techniques for how to use stamps (indenting, making a spring/3D stamp) How to create custom stamps (bisque stamps) Make sprig molds (email students ahead of time and ask them to bring small objects for their sprig molds) Ask students to go online and find one or two simple templates they would be interested in making next week Week 2: Template Overview, Slabs, Using Pre-Made Templates Have students show which templates they brought in, talk about pros and cons Refresher of how to use the slab roller Begin cutting and assembling pieces from templates; students will be shown one circular template (coffee pourover) and one square template (butter dish) Week 3: Creating Your Own Templates with Paper and Tape Go over making custom templates! We will cover circular/cone-shaped templates, c-shaped templates, and square templates. With their template segments, students will have the option to assemble and mix segments together to create their own unique form (this could be a vase, jar, or something abstract) Week 4: Bisque Molds Cover how to create custom bisque molds from a block of clay; have students build a cup, bowl, or tray shape out of solid clay Students will flip their molds upside down and hollow them out. Week 5: Glaze and underglaze overview, finishing molds Use bisque molds from last week’s class to actually create slab pieces Go over underglazing and glazing Finish projects (last work day) Week 6: Glaze Potluck!
