Sculpting Large (Session 8.5, 5 week)

Service Description

This class is held at our Potrero Hill Studio Sculpting Large beginning Tuesday 6-8:30PM;November 18th-January 6th Important Schedule Notes Break Week (Thanksgiving): There will be a break between Week 1 and Week 2 due to the Thanksgiving holiday. The studio will be open for Open Studio Monday–Wednesday, but closed Thursday and Friday for the holiday. Holiday Break (Christmas & New Year): There will be a break between Week 4 and Week 5 for the Christmas and New Year holidays. Classes will resume the first week of January on Monday, January 5th Class Description: In this intermediate Sculpture class, students will learn how to build large-scale sculptures using coiling and stacking methods. Each piece will be broken into two sections that will be fired separately and can be re-assembled post-firing, allowing students to build works larger than a standard kiln (if desired!). Techniques include working with larger coils and slabs, prepping work for even drying, building shrink trays to minimize warping and cracking, and various paint-on glaze techniques. Syllabus: Week 1: Macquettes and planning, Intro to coiling Introductions, class overview, studio tour and clay selection Overview of stacking and keys, introduction to shrink trays which we will make week 3 Students will brainstorm their sculptures and create maquettes While creating maquettes, the instructor will show how to create a slab and begin coiling. Maquettes should be complete and students ready to begin coiling over the next two weeks - check in with instructor for approval of plan. *Break for Thanksgiving* Begin coiling Week 2: Check in, Begin/continue coiling, show how to finish first stack Continue working on first section, demo on how to finish first stacked piece and being second using keys and templates. Week 3: Finish 1st stacked piece, begin 2nd stacked piece, make shrink trays Week 4: Introduction to glazing, finish pieces Overview of various glazing techniques including washes, underglaze, glaze, and oxides Students are encouraged to use paint-on methods *All pieces must be on the bisque shelf no later than end of day on 12/20 to ensure they are ready for glazing!* Zoe will load pieces on the 4th of January to ensure pieces are dry and ready to be glazed on the 6th Week 5: After new year, glaze day! Glaze Party! Students may bring a treat to share and we will glaze our completed sculptures Discuss ways to hide potential cracks and cold-finishing

Cancellation Policy

Fees & class schedule: Class fees cover instructed class time (as listed in specific class schedule), use of tools and equipment, open studio hours, studio glazes and firing up to 25 lbs of clay. Additional work may be fired for a fee. Pottery class fees include 25 lbs of clay + wood classes include all lumber Classes are subject to change if minimum student quota isn't met (7 students). Class switches will only be available 1 week prior to the commencement of classes and based on the capacity of classes at time of request.​ Attendance: It is mandatory for all students who are new to the studio attend the first week of classes. No “make-up” classes are given but you're more than welcome to drop-in on another session if there is an opening or absence. For Adult classes, Kids must be 14-years old or older Personal belongings: Any items left behind 30-days after last class may be discarded without notice. Refund policy: Class fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. Refund or Credit (minus $20 processing fee) if a request for refund is received TWO WEEKS and only two weeks before the start of a class. Credit (no refund) with less the 48 hour notice ONLY if your spot can be filled. No refunds or credits after attending 1st class. Classes missed due to failure to attend, planned absences, minor illnesses or vacations will not be credited for future classes. One-Time class registrations such as Drop-In Clay or Friday Night Clay are considered final ONE WEEK before start of class. Open studio hours for students: Monday- Thursday: 10AM-6PM Friday & Saturday: 10AM-9PM Sunday 10AM-7:30PM (Hours subjected to change upon five days' notice)
