SGRAFFITO CLASS (3 week session 4)
Intermediate
Service Description
This class is held at our Potrero Hill Studio and is a 3 week class in session 4 Wednesday's @6:15-8:45 June 3rd-June 17th Class Description: Explore the art of carving through contrast in this three-week deep dive into sgraffito. Start by throwing a mug or vase of your choice, focusing on clean forms and even walls to set the stage for surface design. In week two, layer colored slip and carve into it to reveal your imagery, patterns, or illustrations. We’ll finish by refining details and glazing with a focus on highlighting your carved work. Week 1 Throwing mugs or vases — your choice We'll spend the first class at the wheel throwing either a mug or a vase — whichever you prefer. Focus on pulling even walls around ¼ inch thick, since consistent thickness makes carving much easier later. Pieces will be set aside to reach leather-hard by next week. Before you come back, spend a little time sketching out ideas for your sgraffito design. Week 2 Sgraffito slip application & carving Once pieces are leather-hard, we'll brush on 2–3 coats of colored slip, choosing a color that contrasts with the clay body. After the slip firms up a bit, you'll transfer your design and carve through the slip layer to reveal the clay beneath — using loop tools, needle tools, or a stylus. Finish by brushing away any loose dust with a soft brush. Week 3 Finishing & glazing final details and kiln prep We'll start by cleaning up any remaining carving details and refining edges. Then it's on to glazing — clear or translucent glazes work best, as they let the sgraffito show through without obscuring the design. Wax the foot ring, apply glaze, clean up any drips, and load onto the kiln shelf.
