Service Description
This class is held at our Potrero Hill Studio and is a 4 week class. Monday @6-9PM November 17th-December 8th Get into the holiday spirit with this festive four-week slip casting course! In this class, students will explore the fundamentals of slip casting using pre-made plaster molds — no mold-making experience required. You’ll pour liquid clay (slip) into molds to create holiday-themed pieces such as ornaments, votives, menorahs, dreidels, snowmen, and more. Over the course of four sessions, you’ll learn how to pour, time, release, clean, and finish slip-cast forms, then glaze and decorate them for firing. By the end of class, you’ll have a collection of charming handmade holiday pieces ready to gift or keep. Important Note: To ensure your pieces are fired and ready before the studio closes for the holidays, all students must adhere to the class timeline below. All work must be up by the end of Week 3 if students want their work back before the Holiday Closure. Syllabus Week 1 – Introduction & Pouring Basics Introduction to slip casting tools, materials, and workflow. Learn proper pouring techniques: timing, thickness, and consistency of slip. Hands-on pouring into a selection of holiday molds (ornaments, votives, dreidels, etc.). Introduction to basic clean-up and mold care. Discussion on drying times and how to properly release cast pieces from molds. Week 2 – In-Depth Pouring & Clean-Up Continue pouring and explore larger or more complex molds (snowmen, menorahs, candle holders). Optional: Color Slip Casting? In-depth demo on refining seams, trimming, and surface clean-up. Learn best practices for handling delicate greenware. Students may begin adding decorative details (carving, texture, or slip additions). All new pours should be completed by the end of class to allow time for drying and firing. Week 3 – Finishing & Preparing for Bisque Firing Focus on finishing and surface refinement: smoothing, carving, or adding details before firing. Final clean-up and quality checks — ensure all pieces are on the greenware rack by the end of class. Optional: light underglaze application for decorative accents prior to bisque. Week 4 – Glazing & Decorating Introduction to glaze and color choices suited for holiday pieces. Demonstrations on brushing, dipping, and using underglaze or clear glaze combinations. Guidance on glazing small, detailed items for clean, even results. Students will glaze and set all finished work on the glaze cart for firing.
