Service Description

This class is held at our Potrero Hill Studio and is a 6 week class in session 5.5 Wednesday's @6:00-8:30PM July 22nd-August 26th Class Description: This course introduces students to the history, aesthetics, materials, and technical processes of soda firing. Students will explore the range of atmospheric surface effects possibilities of soda firing through form, texture, slips, clay bodies, and kiln placement. Through demonstrations, discussions, and hands-on projects, participants will experiment with altered forms, surface decoration, flashing slips, and firing strategies to develop a deeper understanding of how flame, heat, and soda vapor interact with ceramic surfaces. Emphasis will be placed on designing and preparing work specifically for atmospheric firing environments (soda, wood, etc.). The class encourages experimentation and cultivates an understanding of how to create work that responds to and takes advantage of the unique surface qualities produced by atmospheric kilns. Ideal for students planning to participate in atmospheric firings. ****This class does NOT include an atmospheric firing. You must register separately for one. Cone 5/6 mid range electric glaze firing is included. ***** INCLUDED: Cone 10 clay, flashing slip, and bisque firing. You have an option to choose cone 5/6 clay and fire with mid-range glaze fire at Clayroom. Syllabus Week 1: Lecture on soda firing: History and evolution, atmosphere and chemistry, surface characteristics, kiln types and firing cycles. Review of sample clay, slips, forms, and effects. Altered forms on wheel session #1. \ Week 2: Altered forms on wheel session #2 Week 3: Flashing slip composition, effects, and design. Application on greenware. Week 4: Hand building and decorative surface design options Week 5: Individual project week Week 6: Firing planning: Space, stacking, staging/orientation. Loading and unloading day preview. Post-firing clean up demo.

Cancellation Policy

Fees & class schedule: Class fees cover instructed class time (as listed in specific class schedule), use of tools and equipment, open studio hours, studio glazes and firing up to 25 lbs of clay. Additional work may be fired for a fee. Pottery class fees include 25 lbs of clay + wood classes include all lumber Classes are subject to change if minimum student quota isn't met (7 students). Class switches will only be available 1 week prior to the commencement of classes and based on the capacity of classes at time of request.​ Attendance: It is mandatory for all students who are new to the studio attend the first week of classes. No “make-up” classes are given but you're more than welcome to drop-in on another session if there is an opening or absence. For Adult classes, Kids must be 14-years old or older Personal belongings: Any items left behind 30-days after last class may be discarded without notice. Refund policy: Class fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. Refund or Credit (minus $20 processing fee) if a request for refund is received TWO WEEKS and only two weeks before the start of a class. Credit (no refund) with less the 48 hour notice ONLY if your spot can be filled. No refunds or credits after attending 1st class. Classes missed due to failure to attend, planned absences, minor illnesses or vacations will not be credited for future classes. One-Time class registrations such as Drop-In Clay or Friday Night Clay are considered final ONE WEEK before start of class. Open studio hours for students: Monday- Wednesday: 10AM-6PM Thursday: 10AM-8:30PM Friday & Saturday: 10AM-9PM Sunday 10AM-7:30PM (Hours subjected to change upon five days' notice)
