Service Description
This class is held at our Potrero Hill Studio and is a 3 week class in session 7 Wednesday @6:30-9PM September 24th-October 8th Bring personality to your walls with handmade ceramic decor! In this fast-paced, hands-on 3-week class, you’ll create functional and decorative pieces that combine style, craftsmanship, and a dash of your own flair. We’ll start with simple yet practical wall hooks, move on to personalized picture frames, and finish with a week dedicated to decorating and glazing techniques that make your creations pop. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned maker looking for a quick creative project, you’ll leave with unique pieces ready to hang at home or gift to someone special. Week 1 — Wall Hooks Introduction & Inspiration: Overview of ceramic wall decor possibilities; discussion of form, function, and mounting methods. Design Planning: Sketching hook shapes, considering weight-bearing needs, wall space, and style. Making Techniques: Hand-building methods (slab, pinch, coil) for small but strong pieces. Practical Considerations: How to incorporate holes, hardware, or keyhole slots for wall-mounting. Drying & Labeling: Preparing hooks for the bisque firing. Week 2 — Picture Frames Design Approaches: Classic rectangle vs. organic or sculptural shapes; inspiration from contemporary and traditional frames. Construction: Building frames using slabs and templates for uniformity; integrating texture, carved details, or add-ons like miniature sculptures. Functionality: Creating a back slot or tabs for holding photos/artwork; options for tabletop vs. wall-hanging designs. Finishing Touches: Smoothing edges, refining joints, and prepping frames for bisque firing. Week 3 — Decorating & Glazing Surface Design Options: Underglaze painting, sgraffito, stamping, wax resist, and layered glazing for depth and texture. Glaze Selection: How to choose glazes that complement your decor style and work with your surface textures. Hands-On Practice: Applying decorative techniques to both the wall hooks and picture frames. Final Steps: Firing process overview, troubleshooting common glaze issues, and tips for safe mounting at home.

Fees & class schedule: Class fees cover instructed class time (as listed in specific class schedule), use of tools and equipment, open studio hours, studio glazes and firing up to 25 lbs of clay. Additional work may be fired for a fee. Pottery class fees include 25 lbs of clay + wood classes include all lumber Classes are subject to change if minimum student quota isn't met (7 students). Class switches will only be available 1 week prior to the commencement of classes and based on the capacity of classes at time of request. Attendance: It is mandatory for all students who are new to the studio attend the first week of classes. No “make-up” classes are given but you're more than welcome to drop-in on another session if there is an opening or absence. For Adult classes, Kids must be 14-years old or older Personal belongings: Any items left behind 30-days after last class may be discarded without notice. Refund policy: Class fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. Refund or Credit (minus $20 processing fee) if a request for refund is received TWO WEEKS and only two weeks before the start of a class. Credit (no refund) with less the 48 hour notice ONLY if your spot can be filled. No refunds or credits after attending 1st class. Classes missed due to failure to attend, planned absences, minor illnesses or vacations will not be credited for future classes. One-Time class registrations such as Drop-In Clay or Friday Night Clay are considered final ONE WEEK before start of class. Open studio hours for students: Monday- Thursday: 10AM-6PM Friday & Saturday: 10AM-9PM Sunday 10AM-7:30PM (Hours subjected to change upon five days' notice)
